Winter Septic Maintenance in Ontario

Freezing temperatures and seasonal cottages create extra risks for septic systems.

Before deep freeze

  • Pump if you are due before spring (access is harder under heavy snow)
  • Insulate or heat-tape risers where recommended by your contractor
  • Fix leaking fixtures that send continuous flow to the tank

  • Avoid plowing snow piles onto the leaching bed
  • Do not use de-icing salts heavily over the bed area

  • Shut off water and drain fixtures per your plumber’s instructions

  • Open cottage in spring with a visual check of the bed before heavy use
