How Often Should You Pump Your Septic Tank in Ontario?
Ontario does not set one calendar rule for every property—the right interval depends on how fast your tank fills with sludge and scum.
Rule of thumb
| Situation | Typical interval |
| Family of 4, 1,000–1,500 L tank | Every 3–5 years |
| Large household or small tank | Every 2–3 years |
| Seasonal cottage | Every 2–4 seasons (inspect annually) |
| High water use (softener, laundry) | Sooner than average |
Signs you are overdue
Use professional measurements
Pumpers measure sludge depth at the outlet. When the bottom of the scum layer is within about 30 cm of the outlet baffle, schedule pumping—do not wait for a backup.
