Opening the cottage
Inspect the bed area for surfacing effluent or soggy soil
Run water slowly on first visit to check for odours or slow drains
Schedule pumping if the tank was not emptied in the previous fall
While you are there
Conserve water—spread laundry and dishwasher loads
Do not flush wipes or household chemicals
Keep vehicles off the bed and maintain a mowed grass cover
Closing for winter
Pump before freeze-up if due; mark lid locations for spring
Shut off water and follow your plumber's drain-down steps
Avoid pouring automotive antifreeze into fixtures unless your installer approves
